After the Course is Over: Quick and Inexpensive Ways to Extend Learning into the Workplace

Most studies estimate that our learners will forget around 70% of the knowledge they acquire from our formal learning courses. Since the ultimate measure of our training is to enable effective performance back on the job, a retention-of-learning rate of 30% is not good enough. We need to find ways to make the workplace an opportunity for employees to retrieve, apply, and extend their formal learning – rather than a place to lose it.

In this session, Hal Christensen will demonstrate a practical model (a Playbook) that accomplishes that goal by delivering the just-in-time knowledge workers need – to their PCs at their desks and to their mobile devices on the road – long after the course is over. And he l will also demonstrate how each of us can begin immediately to produce similar Playbooks for our own courses and audiences, using an application many of us are already familiar with: the popular, easy-to-use – and free – Evernote.

For 30 years, Hal Christensen has been creating performance improvement solutions for the staffs of many of New York's largest organizations. A leader and pioneer in the use of computer technology to augment learning and working, he helped introduce both eLearning and Performance Support to the New York Metropolitan area. His Performance Support solutions have won several awards, and he has been invited to deliver over three dozen presentations on performance support and other topics at national professional conferences. Currently he is the Founder and Chair of the ATD-NY chapter Special Interest Group on Performance Support and Informal Learning and teaches an online course, "Creating Effective Performance Support Systems."
